BA – Batting average (also abbreviated AVG): hits divided by at bats (H/AB) BB – Base on balls (also called a “walk”): hitter not swinging at four pitches called out of the strike zone and awarded first base.
A Plate Appearance (PA) is counted when a player completes their batting turn, regardless of the result. An At-Bat (AB) is any Plate Appearance that results in a hit, error, fielder’s choice, or a non-sacrifice out. Any other result of a Plate Appearance does not count as an At-Bat.
Explain that a batting average is calculated by first counting the number of times that a batter reaches base by getting a hit. This number of hits is then divided by the number of times that he gets a chance to hit (an “At Bat”).
Why Is BB Also Called a Walk. A BB (as per baseball BB meaning) is also called a walk because, in actuality (as per details defined in the baseball rules), a batter/hitter cannot legally walk towards a base. His only privilege to walk into a base is when he can avoid four straight balls pitched outside the strike zone.
Receiving a base on balls does not count as a hit or an at bat for a batter but does count as a time on base and a plate appearance. Therefore, a base on balls does not affect a player’s batting average, but it can increase his on-base percentage.
Strikeout to walk ratio (K/BB): You can’t simply look at strikeout-to-walk ratio and make firm judgments about a pitcher. But as supporting evidence goes, it’s one of the most useful “eyeball” stats out there.
HBP: Hit by pitch. HP: Home plate. HR: Home Run. IBB: Intentional base on balls. IF: Infielder.
Pitcher. A baseball position that is the player that pitches the ball to the catcher from the mound; often seen on baseball rosters, score cards, and fantasy baseball leagues; can also appear as SP and RP which represent the type of pitcher.
Rules. As addressed within Rule 9.02(a)(1) of the Official Baseball Rules a sacrifice fly is not counted as a time at bat for the batter, though the batter is credited with a run batted in.
A player is awarded a run if he crosses the plate to score his team a run. When tallying runs scored, the way in which a player reached base is not considered. If a player reaches base by an error or a fielder’s choice, as long as he comes around to score, he is still credited with a run.
The E on a baseball scoreboard stands for Errors and is the number of errors awarded to the defense during the duration of the game. This number calculates all the defensive errors per team and gives spectators a general idea of how well a team is doing defensively.
The baseball rulebook says that you can’t steal a base during a dead ball. However, unlike the hit batter or catcher’s interference situations, after a walk, the ball is live. This means that baserunners who are not forced to advance to the next base can still attempt to do so, at their own risk.
On Base Plus Slugging

Definition. Slugging percentage represents the total number of bases a player records per at-bat. Unlike on-base percentage, slugging percentage deals only with hits and does not include walks and hit-by-pitches in its equation. Slugging percentage differs from batting average in that all hits are not valued equally.
On the average, a typical Varsity high school fastball is between 75-85 mph, although many good Varsity pitchers will be seeing the upper 80s and low 90 range. The Freshmen pitchers will usually be throwing at a comparable speed to the 13 and 14 year olds, and the Sophomores will lie somewhere in the middle.
WHIP reflects a pitcher’s propensity for allowing batters to reach base, therefore a lower WHIP indicates better performance. While earned run average (ERA) measures the runs a pitcher gives up, WHIP more directly measures a pitcher’s effectiveness against batters.
The Best Ways to Evaluate Hitters
For those who don’t know, OPS is “on-base plus slugging,” or a hitter’s on-base percentage (OBP) plus his slugging percentage (SLUG). Crude as it is, it is a better reflection of a hitter’s talent than the traditional trio of average, homers and RBI. Hitters exist to score runs.
mound. The pitcher’s mound is a raised section in the middle of the diamond where the pitcher stands when throwing the pitch.

Definition. A screwball is a breaking ball designed to move in the opposite direction of just about every other breaking pitch. It is one of the rarest pitches thrown in baseball, mostly because of the tax it can put on a pitcher’s arm.
