When a rainout occurs the affected game can either be delayed/postponed or rescheduled. If the event is postponed or delayed due to weather, the game is usually played later that same day, once the weather clears.
Most leagues will proceed as planned if it is simply sprinkling or if the rain is fairly moderate, but on days when there is a heavy downpour or a lightning storm, the league will reschedule the game. It is not safe for baseball players to be running around the field when visibility is low and traction is impossible.
Rain delays occur quite often in baseball, but not all rain delays result in a rainout. While a rain delay is a postponement of the game for as much time as it takes for the weather to clear, a rainout is a result that effectively postpones the game until a later date.
As part of MLB’s health and safety protocols for the shortened 2020 season, the rain delay rules are a bit different than they’ve been in the past, but only for non-official games. If weather causes a game to be cut short before it is official, it will be continued at a later date from the point of the stoppage.
If the visiting team can record 15 outs and is leading, they will win by default if the game goes into a rainout. If the game goes into a rain delay and is eventually called before 15 outs, the game is canceled.
A suspended game in baseball occurs when a game has to be stopped before it can be completed, and the game is meant to be finished at a later time or date.
The most frequent cause of a suspended game is when a regulation game is terminated due to weather, and the game is either tied or in the midst of an inning in which the visiting team has taken the lead.
If a regulation game (as defined by Major League Baseball) has not been played and the game is rescheduled as part as a single-admission doubleheader or is cancelled and not rescheduled, your paid ticket serves as your rain check.
Major League games technically have no time-limit, but when averaged out, most major league games last around 3 hours and 9 innings. On the other hand, tee-ball games will be between 3-5 innings and last about an hour and a half.
It’s been a common sight at Wrigley Field and ballparks across the country this year. In the 2018 season, 53 games have been postponed because of weather, tied for the second most since Major League Baseball began keeping track in 1986.
More than 700 games over four recent seasons were played when lightning was dangerously close. During a night when every Major League Baseball team is in action, odds are that lightning activity is unsafely close to at least one of its stadiums, a recent study found.
Inclement weather
(This depends on the rules of each individual league.) In either case, no statistics are counted until the game becomes official. Since most professional baseball games are nine innings long, the fifth inning is used as the threshold for an official game.
In baseball, extra innings occur when the score remains tied at the end of the ninth inning. The rules in extra innings are different throughout the various leagues and levels of competition, but the premise remains the same: determining the winner of the game.

Playing on a Wet Field
Little League players may continue a game during rain or wet conditions if the umpire, coaches or other Little League official has determined that the field is safe for play. Adults should inspect the paths between bases, the infield and the outfield for any unsafe locations.
The current American League curfew, adopted following the 1967 season, does not allow any inning of a night game to begin after 12:59 a.m.
Always check our website for up to date game information. In the event of games being cancelled due to weather, the league will send out notifications via text, as well as email or Facebook when possible.
If the batter delays the game by stepping out of the batter’s box without a permissible action taking place, a strike is called. A strike is also called if the batter fails to enter the batters box within twenty seconds.
In the event of a rainout or postponement, your ticket will be good for any regular season game later in the season and may be exchanged at Four Winds Field box office for a ticket of equal or lesser value subject to availability.
