Definition. A starting pitcher is credited with a shutout when he pitches the entire game for a team and does not allow the opposition to score. By definition, any pitcher who throws a shutout is also awarded a win.

In hockey, when two goalies play and neither allow a goal against, who gets the shutout? Neither goalie would be credited with the shutout, it would be marked as a team shutout.

A shutout is the result of the goaltender stopping all shots faced during the game. While the winning team is recognized for earning the shutout, only the goalie receives credit in the official stats.
During the 1988 Major League Baseball season, pitcher Orel Hershiser of the Los Angeles Dodgers set the MLB record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched. Over 59 consecutive innings, opposing hitters did not score a run against Hershiser.
