So far in 2022, there have been 38 sacrifice bunts. Unlike recent years where NL teams would lead this list and almost all the AL teams would be at the bottom, teams are distributed randomly. The Nationals lead the list with five. Next, with three, are the Yankees, Red Sox, Padres, Angels, Rockies and Mets.
A pitch timer, limits on defensive shifts and bigger bases are coming to Major League Baseball in 2023. Following recent experiments in the Minor Leagues, the recently formed Joint Competition Committee voted Friday in favor of three rule changes aimed at improving pace of play, action and safety at the MLB level.
The bunting rule is a baseball guideline that states the batter can only hit the ball two times before they are allowed to bunt. This rule prevents batters from swinging at bad balls and making weak contact, instead opting for an easier out by tapping the ball gently to second base.
The lefthanded batter can leverage the drag bunt to put the ball in play with less than 2 strikes. With 2 strikes, you do not want to bunt and risk fouling out. Therefore, the slap hit can be used to put the ball in play with 2 strikes and NOT risking a foul out.
In USA Softball, the batter can leave the bat over the plate on a bunt attempt, provided she doesn’t move the bat toward the ball, and not have a strike called if the ball is out of the zone. In all other codes, the batter must pull the bat back in order to not have a strike called.

A swing is an attempt at a pitch, that is not a bunt. That includes what is referred to as a “checked swing” or “half swing.” It is up to the judgment of the umpire(s) if the batter attempted at a pitched ball.
2-8 A bunt is a fair ball in which the batter does not swing to hit the ball, but holds the bat in the path of the ball to tap it slowly to the infield.

It is much easier to make contact with a pitch on a bunt than with a regular swing. The foul out on a bunt rule basically exists to speed up play and prevent gamesmanship on the part of the batter.
If a foul ball is counted against the batter then the batter has more strikes against him. These extra strikes increase the odds of him leaving the batter’s box – either from swinging and attempting to make contact or from striking out.
MLB is also increasing the size of bases from 15 inches square to 18 inches square. This gives infielders more distance between themselves and baserunners, in a bid to decrease collisions. The change also decreases base-to-base distance by 4.5 inches.

Umpires check pitchers’ hands for illegal substances that could be used on the ball to gain an advantage during the game. In 2021 it was revealed that some MLB pitchers used a resin-based substance called Spider Tack during games.
The infield shift strategy is often associated with Ted Williams, but it was actually first employed against Cy Williams during the 1920s.
Major League Baseball passed a sweeping set of rules changes it hopes will fundamentally overhaul the game, voting Friday to implement a pitch clock and ban defensive shifts in 2023 to hasten the game’s pace and increase action.

The shift limit requires two infielders to be on either side of second and all infielders to be within the outer boundary of the infield when the pitcher is on the rubber, and infielders may not switch sides unless there is a substitution.
However, for the first time since his exile from baseball, Rose appears truly sorry. His apology did not hold the same tone as previous ones. Rather than another lame dog attempt at reinstatement, this seems like a yearning for respect from his teammates and friends, to whom he apologized profusely.

This controversy is mainly discussed in non-professional baseball leagues, but it also leaves people wondering if MLB players are allowed to slash bunt. In the MLB it is legal to fake a bunt and take a full swing. There is no rule against the slash bunt in the official rules of the MLB.
